Monday Morning #6

Playstation or Praystation?

Coca-Cola It's the real thing or Jesus-Christ He's the real thing?

Abercrombie & Fitch or A breadcrumb and fish?

YouTube or GodTube?

Those are some of my favorite Culture icons turned Jesus Gear. There are a million more but these seem to be the ones I always come back to. I find this trend of the church taking things from culture and making them their own very interesting.

Some would say we are redeeming or sanctifying culture and others would simply say we lack the creativity to create our own "slogans."

This type of clothing or paraphernalia takes what is accepted in the world puts a little God spin on it and then call it holy. We as the church become a sub-culture. We take what the culture is doing, put a little God spin on it and call it Christian. We turn ourselves into a microcosm of what the world is.

This presents us with the enormous temptation of Apathy. We simply take our cues of how we live life from culture then spin it to include God. For us as Christians the challenge is to break free from the apathetic sub-culture and begin to let God create a counter-culture through us. When we think about our lives oftentimes they are simply the same as everyone else's with a little God spin on them.

What would it look like for you to live a counter-cultural life for Christ instead of blending into the sub-culture we have created?
