Optimist, Pessimist, Realist and Christian

My wife used to get upset with me because I was what some would call insensitive. I preferred to use the term realist. Some of us claim to be optimists or that others are pessimists! My thoughts lately have been centered on what type of attitude I should have and have settled on the term Christian. I should have a Christian Attitude. Not the Ned Flanders type attitude but the Christian type attitude that sees past the weaknesses in people and into the potential of what they could be in Jesus Christ.

When Jesus chose his disciples in Luke 5 we see he picked guys who were viewed very pessimistically. These guys had no education or skills; they were simply fishermen at the bottom of the economic ladder.

Jesus did not choose them on what they were but on what they could become.

That is a huge challenge for me. My tendency is to be a realist and judge people on what I see. But I am praying to be like Jesus, to have a Christian attitude and see people as who they could become.
