Forgivness

Have you ever gotten revenge and felt good about it? Probably not, at least not for more than about 10 minutes. Human nature tells us when somebody hurts us, we need to make things even. For example, if you were an Alabama fan, you would feel like you needed to beat Auburn 6 times in a row to make things even.

In Romans 12, Scripture tells us that judgment is for God, not us. This should free us from the burden of having to personally make sure all things are fair in the world.

George Wallace, Jr. is dealing with the fact that the man who shot his father is getting out of jail about 17 years early. Most people in his position would feel the need to fight the release of Mr. Bremer and “make things right.” But over the past few years, I have come to personally know Mr. Wallace as a true follower of Christ. He was quoted as saying, "My father forgave him and my family has forgiven him. That's consistent with God's law. Then there is man's law. I doubt the punishment has fit the crime." Through our conversations, I have been amazed by the humility and personal peace he has shown when talking about Mr. Bremer. He does not need revenge. He understands that Arthur Bremer does not answer to George Wallace, Jr., but to God. The peace he has is what comes from knowing that God did not put him on this earth to judge, but to love and forgive as Jesus Christ himself did.

Are you playing the role of Judge or Christian? Even when we feel like the victim of an injustice, we can still not let past sins of others keep us from receiving the future grace and blessing of Jesus Christ.
